TAMARA MELLON believes that there should be a board quota for women in business.

"When people see the results of what it means when a woman is on the board they will know it is the right thing to do," said Mellon at a talk held at The Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design yesterday. "Of course no woman wants to be the token female - only there because it is a requirement. I can see both sides of the argument for and against, but until we have 30 per cent minimum how will women get the chance? We certainly need more women in leadership roles."

Mellon is known for having co-founded Jimmy Choo, but left the company in 2011 after the business was sold to Labelux. In July 2013, she launched her own brand - which sells ready-to-wear, handbags and shoes - and is currently in London to promote her autobiography, In My Shoes. The entrepreneur maintains that the way in which many women approach work can be harmful to the success of their careers - especially in comparison to their male counterparts.

"Women work themselves to death and sit quietly hoping they will be noticed whereas a man will walk in and demand a pay rise," she said. "Women need to know our own worth."
