Early Beginnings:

Born in Owerri, Imo State, Nwankwo Kanu initiated his football journey at the local side Federation Works before progressing to Iwuanyanwu Nationale. His exceptional skills came to the forefront during Nigeria's triumphant U-17 World Championship, leading to a notable signing by Dutch giants AFC Ajax in 1993.


Ajax Years:

Kanu's tenure with Ajax saw him make his debut in 1993, scoring 25 goals in 54 appearances. He played a pivotal role in Ajax's 1995 UEFA Champions League triumph, contributing as a substitute in the final against AC Milan. Despite losing the final to Juventus in the following year, Kanu's impact was undeniable.


Inter Milan and Olympic Gold:

Moving to Serie A side Inter Milan in 1996, Kanu experienced a career-threatening moment when a medical examination revealed a serious heart defect. Overcoming this setback with successful surgery, he captained Nigeria to Olympic gold in 1996, showcasing resilience and determination.

In the 2011–12 season, Kanu faced reduced playing time and was eventually removed from the bench due to fitness and injury issues. With Portsmouth facing financial difficulties, Kanu, one of the highest earners, left the club in 2012. A subsequent legal dispute over unpaid wages was eventually dropped by Kanu in April 2013.
