I have gotten these before with the kits I've purchased from Crutchfield, but this is the first time I've written a review. The Land Rover Discovery 2 I have came with the OEM Nav head unit, and I wasn't sure I'd need or use these for it (and the instructions that came with the kit were only for the standard OEM head unit). Well, these worked perfectly. It took a couple tries to determine which "head" of the tool was correct, but the OEM head unit came out easy peasy and no breakage of the really brittle Lad Rover plastic.
Pros: Worked perfect.

Adequate
John from New Haven, CT on 6/6/2016
2004 Volkswagen GTI
My head unit was really wedged in. The thin metal pressed uncomfortably into my hand like a dull knife when I put any pulling force. These might be useful if you have multiple types of clips, but I would have rather gotten my specific clip type with plastic rings on the end. Also, check your system because you might need to release four clips and require two sets of two.
Pros: Fits multiple clip types.
Cons: Cuts into hands with any pulling pressure. Easy to bend.

Metra 86-9001 Factory Radio Removal Tools Reviews
Wade M from Denver, CO on 4/6/2016
2002 Volkswagen Beetle
This is a pretty simple and effective tool that does what it's designed to do--remove the in-dash radio. It would be nice if the handles had a soft curved surface, but then we are only talking about a $6 tool! In fact, the shipping was more than the cost of the part, which seemed excessive, as it can be fit into a business size envelope...
Pros: easy to use, durable
Cons: Shipping costs

Metra 86-9001 Factory Radio Removal Tools
Ernie L from torrance, CA on 2/5/2016
2002 Porsche Boxster
I had to call the Crutchfield Technical line for help because the existing radio just won't move with the tool inserted as instructed per the Master Sheet. Daniel S sent me a link to the Youtube and then it is obvious the factory radio's retaining clip works completely different than all the after market sleeve retainer. The Boxster factory radio has no sleeve. The tool after insertion collapses the clips in the radio and allows the radio to slide outward. The Youtube video saves the day.
Pros: Technical help, Daniel S, came to the rescue with the Youtube video that shows how the factory radio clips work.
Cons: Master Sheet should state that the 2002 Boxster S factory unit has no sleeve and furthermore the right side of the opening needs to be enlarge about 1/8" to fit the CZ305 sleeve.

Wish it was cheaper to just not order these
Tom from Fairfax, VA on 2/3/2016
2004 Volkswagen Jetta
These worked as designed, but I didn't exactly need them. I got them as part of a "kit" when ordering my new radio. The kit comes with 4 components: - wiring harness - antenna adapter - dash pocket - radio removal tools Sadly, it is cheaper to buy all four of these together than it would be to just buy the first two. I didn't need these tools as I already owned some, nor did I need the dash pocket. One more thing to either get lost in the toolbox or end up in the trash.
Pros: Appears to be useful for radios from multiple manufacturers
Cons: Other, manufacturer specific tools are more ergonomic

Works but marginal
Rich from Nevada City, CA on 1/20/2016
2008 Audi A4
The tool works but you have to be very careful because the metal is really soft and the catch notches tend to round off causing it to slip. Almost didn't work because it kept slipping and getting worse. Note that if you have a double DIN radio you might need two sets (2 tools each for a total of 4 tools) to remove it.
Pros: Works with some very careful fidgeting.
Cons: Soft metal which causes the catch notches to round off and slip. Very marginal for tight fitting factory radios such as a 2008 Audi A4.

It works well! The tri-star shape takes up more space at the cost of the added utility of having more key shapes.
Pros: Works!
Cons: Maybe a larger size and shape than other radio removal options out there.

cheap, stamped pot metal keys that didn't work. in fact, inserting these keys "sprung" the clips holding the radio in, rendering them useless!..could no longer remove the radio using this method. had to destroy the factory radio to remove it. but, to be fair to the manufacturer of these sharp edged throwing stars, Crutchfield needs to share the blame for this one. they never sent me the removal instructions. ZERO stars for both.
Pros: none
Cons: didn't work, period.

Sharp, Not great
Crutchfield customer from California on 10/8/2015
2002 Volkswagen Jetta
Use work gloves when using these! as i cut myself trying to pull/use these(not too bad), they worked OK on a couple of the 4 key-ways to unClick radio. I ended up just ripping apart the old radio face and tearing out the old bezel in a fit of rage!! with large pair of pliers and flat head screwdriver.
Pros:
Cons: Sharp, weak(bends easy), Other then what end to use Instructions are useless.

WCDennis from North Carolina on 9/27/2015

Like other things I bought with the Metra name, the quality is fine, but the instructions are awful. Ignore the little sheet that comes with this tool, instead look at the PDF on this site. If you use it correctly, the tool goes in with a satisfying click and makes extraction of the stock unit a breeze.
Pros: Absolutely necessary tool at a decent price.
Cons: Worthless instructions.

Great product
Kaspa7 from Durham, NC on 6/3/2014
1995 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The custoner service tech who helped me order my JVC KD-R650 head unit advised me to get this item. It was absolutely necessary for installing this head unit in my 1995 Mercedes C280. It simplified the wiring a LOT by providing 4 RCA jacks that connected to the left/right, front/rear speaker outputs of the head unit. Sure beats having EIGHT MORE wires to splice into the car's wiring harness. Two of the connectors from the car's wiring harness plug into this adapter. There is no way to connect them incorrectly! The head unit is supplied with a wiring harness that matches the Metra adapter. The eight speaker wires were not used, as the RCA plugs took care of that. There were only 5 wires to connect. Match them color-to-color and you can't go wrong.
Pros: Simple and easy installation. Very little room for error. If you can match 5 colored wires on this adapter to the same 5 colored wires from the radio, you can't.won't do anything wrong. Worked perfectly as soon as I powered up the unit.
Cons: None. Everything with the installation went perfectly.

Hunter from Baton Rouge, LA on 11/10/2013

They fit, but it's very easy to insert too far into the slots and bend the small levers they clip to. They also have sharp edges, so wear gloves if you use them. The dealership uses a plate with keys attached to insure a proper angle. If you bend the levers, you'll have to remove the dash to pull the VW head unit out so I highly suggest you bring the car to the dealership and have the techs pull the head unit for you.
Pros: They work when inserted properly.
Cons: Sharp edges and easy to insert too far.

Works as expected
JJ from Charlottesville, VA on 8/2/2013
2003 Volkswagen Jetta
The tools work great, and i would give it 5 stars, but I think the manufacturer could stand to smooth the edges on these so they don't scratch as easily. One false move and BANG a nice little scratch in what ever it touches. Other than that, they work exactly as expected. ***Note, they cannot be removed until the radio is pulled as you have to manually press the tabs back in to remove the tools. At that's how it has to be done on an Audi.
Pros: Works as expected. The start design gives you something to pull on to remove the radio as there is really not much to grab hold of on these radios.
Cons: Sharp edges. Carefully of cuts and scratches on anything you might touch with them. Keep them in plastic during storage so they don't damage anything around them.

Metra 86-9001 Factory Radio Removal Tools
Ben from Eugene, OR on 6/16/2012
The tool worked well. I recommend wearing gloves as the pressure needed to remove my factory Porsche CDR-230 deck was painful due to the thin metal. Otherwise would be 5 stars. But Hey! It worked.
Pros: Crutchfield provided it at no additional cost. It worked.
Cons: Metal is thin and could cut, wear gloves and no problem.

MB radio removal keys
GST from Carlsbad, CA on 6/14/2012
1995 Mercedes-Benz E320
On older W124 chassis with somewhat inset radio, the tool does not work unless you bend or cut off one of the three legs. Other than that, it is serviceable and does work as intended.
Pros: Works but may require some modification.
Cons: Needs modification to work on some older MB models.

Perfect!
Lou from Italy on 4/2/2012

Something so simple totally made the install a breeze! If you've never used anything like this before, read the directions. They are thin because they have to be. With that said, be careful because the edges can be sharp. If you're using them correctly they are more than strong enough... If they are bending, you're doing it wrong
Pros: This tool is invaluable!
Cons: May have sharp edges

Read the directions. Saw some goof ball on You Tube use these wrong. If you spend less than a minute reading the directions you will have no problems. WEAR GLOVES when using these. They are cheap and will cut you if you're not careful.
Pros: Free and do the job.
Cons: Poorly made and universal.

Remember, If you want to do the job right you need the right tools. You have to have these tools if you want to remove your stock stereo without damaging your radio or interior trim. Follow the directions. Start out by inserting the tools and pulling out with light pressure on the right side then the left and work the radio out little by little going back and forth from one side to the other and you'll find out it will come out quite nicely.
Pros: Works!
Cons: edges sharp

Worked for me
Happy Audi Driver from Oklahoma on 12/3/2011
2002 Audi A4
I was somewhat skeptical of these tools based on other reviews; however, these worked just fine for me in removing a Bose system from my 2002 Audi A4. Took no more than 5 minutes to do the job. The metal is very thin and sharp. I wore a pair of gloves based on other reviews and things worked fine. Don't know if I'd want these for a commercial opperation where I had to use them frequently but for the job I had, they worked fine.
Pros: Prompt delivery. Worked as advertised.
Cons: Very thin metal; one bent while using but it was easy to straighten out.

ouch!
Crutchfield customer from Katy, Tx on 11/15/2011
I got two sets of DIN tools with my stereo, to remove my old head unit. They were incredibly flimsy, bent on me and had very sharp edged that cut up my fingers and imbedded steel slivers in my hands. I work with my hands, so my callouses can take most minor abuses. These tools exceeded my durability. Be careful, wear gloves.
Pros: not much. They did the work, but just barely.
Cons: thin sheet metal bent easily when force was applied, sharp edges cut up my hands!

Worst tool ever!
Crutchfield customer from Salem, NH on 4/17/2011
Man can you say cheap! This tool they sent was the worst ever! It was so flimsy that it kept bending. It never did work on pulling out my factory radio, and I had to resort to actually prying the faceplate off like I was stealing it to get to the tabs and use a screwdriver to pull the radio out. Good thing I had a new radio to go in or I would have been screwed. The tools were made of very cheap metal and kept bending and were very sharp.

ScruddlyJr from Fort Collins, CO on 4/7/2011
I didn't think I would need these, but since I had to wait for some other parts to exchange my stereo, I decided to pay the few bucks to add them to my order - I am glad I did! These made getting the factory radio out of my Crossfire a two second operation rather than 15 minutes of fiddling with thin bladed screw drivers. Highly recommendedA

Flimsy
CP from Cincinnati, OH on 3/28/2011
2003 Volkswagen Passat
While the tool could potentially work for its intended purpose, it is flimsy and difficult to hold/pull on. While I understand that it shouldn't need more than a slight tug, if at all, on difficult pulls where the radio unit doesn't cooperate, the tool hurt to pull on. Save yourself the trouble and invest the $ in a decent pull set if you are going to be needing them on a time to time basis. For one time pulls, I suppose this tool would be sufficient.

Super Easy Radio Removal
alex from CT on 11/24/2010
2000 Volkswagen Jetta
I have a double DIN radio in my 2001 Audi A6, and I ordered two pairs of these tools to fit into the four slots on the radio. I popped all four tools in, they all clicked, then I gently pulled the radio out, and I was done. Literally took less than five minutes to remove the radio, fantastic tools. A note: Once I had the tools in, I wasn't really sure how to get them out. I'm not sure if everyone else just knows, but I was pulling at the tools assuming they just slide back out. What I found out is, on the sides of the radio once you pull it out, are four metal tabs. If you push these tabs in with the tools still in the radio, the tool will unclip, and you can pull it right out.

These were provided "free" when I purchased the radio. Although they claimed they were a value, I wouldn't have paid a dime for them. The edges were as everyone states, increadibly sharp. I sliced all 10 of my fingers in the first 5 seconds of trying to remove the radio. Thank goodness my car had leather, I bled everywhere. One of the tools wouldn't unlock the radio, and the other wouldn't come out at first. BEWARE!

Secondly, they are flimsy and they will easily bend if you are not careful. Thirdly, they were easy to insert into the radio but difficult to remove so be patient and don't panic.
