TV presenter and broadcaster Timmy Mallett has miffed Scotland after claiming that Bonnie Prince Charlie dressed like a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

The 1980s icon claimed that the young royal would don the white gown used by the infamous racist group. The now 67-year-old said it was worn as a disguise.

The 'Wackaday' presenter was discussing the outfit on Facebook during a cycle ride on the Hebridean Way. Speaking to his 100K followers said the Prince would hide from officials by wearing something similar to the getup synonymous with the KKK.

In the short footage, he said: ''Actually that looks a bit scary, like a Klu Klux Klan sort of hood.''

But Joanne Watson, Highlands and Islands costume historian who designed the robe he was referring to, wants a public apology. Speaking to the Press and Journal, she said: “I remain shocked that the historically accurate Irish mantle I made was compared to a Klu Klux Klan outfit by Mr Mallett.

''I want a public apology for dismissing my work and for making up Scottish history. ”

A spokesman for the presenter said: ''There is no way Timmy would have meant this in any way to offend. He apologises for any upset he has inadvertently caused.''
