A West Sussex town has been named among the best inland places to visit in the UK - and it's not too far from Surrey if you fancy venturing outside the county.

Charming and full of history, the picturesque market town of Arundel is probably most famous for two stunning landmarks - Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral.

However, there's so much more to enjoy, with a range of activities on offer, including fishing, boating, outdoor swimming and walks on the nearby South Downs.

Which? surveyed 2,710 members of its online panel who visited an inland town or village in the UK between April 2019 and April 2021 to find the best places to visit.

Arundel came in 18th place, out of a total of 59, with a score of 82 per cent. The score combines the overall satisfaction and the likelihood to recommend it to others.

Unfortunately, no Surrey towns or villages were mentioned in Which?'s list because the survey results only included places that had more than 30 responses.

So, why is Arundel one of the best inland places to visit? Well, SurreyLive has put together a list of things to do in the town, for those wondering what it has to offer.

What is there to do?

Arundel Castle is situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun and was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel.

During your visit, you can expect to see lavish rooms, the 100ft-high motte - an artificial mound, constructed in 1068 - and wander around the magnificent gardens.

There's also a plant fair event coming up on September 19.

Visit the castle website for more details.

Boating on Swanbourne Lake

On a sunny day, the boating lake in Arundel is extremely popular. Rowing boats can be hired and taken around the lake, where you can feed ducks, swans and other birds.

Arundel Park

For those wanting to stretch their legs and make the most of the fresh air, there's a great circular walk through parkland and countryside surrounding Arundel Castle.

The route includes lovely long waterside sections along the River Arun and a visit to a wildfowl reserve. It runs for about eight miles on largely flat footpaths with a couple of moderate climbs on the way.

The walk starts near the castle and picks up the Monarch's Way long distance trail to take you into Arundel Park.
