The giant spider made quite an impression in Liverpool - and now she's wowing crowds in Beijing.

La Princess, the giant mechanical spider which caused a sensation on Merseyside during the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations, has been warming up for a major event in China this weekend.

The colossal arachnid has confronted a 45 tonne mechanical dragon outside the 'Bird's Nest' stadium in Beijing during a public rehearsal for an event to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations being established between France and China.

Operated by French performance art company La Machine, the sculptures will form an eye-catching component of next week's celebrations.

In 2008, the 37-tonne, 50ft spider dangled high above the street from the Concourse Tower on Lime Street before hundreds of thousands of people were entertained during a five-day street theatre event during Culture celebrations.

In Beijing the 45 tonne Long Ma dragon horse was transported 8,000km to its destination in Asia, being split into three parts at an estimated cost at around €600,000.
