Why home-buyers are heading to the Cotswolds town of Tetbury

Looking to move to a town that offers both idyllic countryside and easy access to city life? That’s exactly what you’ll find in Tetbury.

You can catch glimpses of this picturesque market town in our current TV ad, which features a scarecrow in a field, looking longingly towards a nearby town, dreaming of the life she could have there. Once she’s found her long-anticipated ‘one day’ move, you’ll see her exploring the streets of the Gloucestershire town.

Tetbury sits on the edge of the Cotswolds, with trains from nearby Kemble reaching London in just over an hour. The popular market towns of Cirencester and Nailsworth are also nearby.

Highgrove, the family home of Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is just south of Tetbury. The estate’s gardens are open for tours, and the Highgrove shop stocks a big range of artisan produce.

The period charm of Tetbury

The impressive spire of St Mary’s Church towers above Tetbury town centre, which is home to rows of timber-framed Elizabethan architecture and the striking Market House. On the charming, tiered back streets you can still find original wool merchants’ houses, which give a nod to the area’s industrial past.

Home-hunters can find everything from former cotton weavers’ cottages in the heart of the town centre, to converted flats within historic houses. A bit further out you’ll find big countryside houses with sprawling gardens on good-sized plots.

The average asking price for a home in Tetbury currently stands at £422,687, which sits considerably lower than the current London average of £667,110. Sam Kidner, who grew up in the town and has now founded a local estate agency called Hunter French, says period homes with allocated parking and big gardens are the most in demand right now, which are priced between £700,000 and £1 million.

“With many people spending more of their week working from home, buyers who would have traditionally looked to places like Reading are able to look a bit further out on the commuter belt,” he says.

“Tetbury was previously known as an antique-shop town, but we now have lots of bars, restaurants and coffee shops on our high street. This, teamed with around 600 new homes being built in the town, has brought in a younger crowd.”
