With a commanding view over a steep valley and its medieval cathedral, the town of Arundel wouldn't look out of place as a Hollywood film set.

But the West Sussex market town is much more than a pretty backdrop.

Back in 2017 it was named the most relaxing place to visit in the whole of Europe.

Holiday price comparison website TravelSupermarket compiled a guide with two travel writers ranking contenders for the number of relaxing activities they had on offer such as yoga or meditation.

According to MyLondon, the town's population density and the number of spas in each destination were also taken into account in the study, with Arundel also faring well because of its "stunning" setting in the South Downs, with easy access to lots of relaxing walks.

Only about three miles from the south coast, the West Sussex town is very easy on the eye.

It has one of the prettiest high streets in the South East and the whole town is towered over by its spectacular castle.

There are some lovely walks from the town itself, few better than the stroll along the River Arun to the Black Rabbit pub that's on the banks of the river.

If you are feeling really energetic you could try something a little more testing, such as the six-mile walk across the South Downs to the pretty village of Amberley.

It's a good time to visit the town as the castle has just reopened thanks to lockdown restrictions being relaxed.

To control visitor numbers and ensure safe social distancing, all visitors must buy pre-booked tickets online, which are made available on a Friday for the following week.

It costs £15 for adults to have a nose around the castle and its gardens, with children paying £5. The town itself is full of independent shops, art galleries, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, and is a good base for cycling and canoeing.

It is a lovely place to visit at different times of year too.

At Christmas, just after dusk, with the decorations up, the town looks especially pretty.

What else can I do nearby?

If you want to make a weekend of it you aren't far from West Wittering, which has arguably the best beach in West Sussex.

But, be warned, you have to pre-book here too so that the car parks, local road and the beach itself doesn't become overcrowded.

If it was, that just wouldn't be relaxing at all.
