Eton College

Revered worldwide for its historic educational excellence, Eton remains the ultimate goal for young boys happy to board. But with so many brilliant applicants, what does it take to secure a coveted place? The ideal pupil, according to director of admissions Paul Smith, is a super-bright all-rounder, because, ‘if they’re going to come here and struggle [academically], they’re not going to be able to access all the debating, the sport, the plays and the music, which are Eton’s unique selling point’. And it’s one that’s shared at every opportunity with partner schools spanning the length and breadth of the country – including three new ‘accelerator colleges’ in the North – thanks to a stellar combination of world-class teachers and astoundingly good facilities. For example, debating is housed in the stunning, purpose-built, 300-seat Jafar Hall Debating Chamber, where pupils can emulate the eloquence of annual speakers, ranging from presidents to Nobel Laureates. The college’s legendary sporting prowess can be pursued at Athens, the phenomenal new pool and sports centre (shortly set to be joined by an indoor sports facility offering a dojo, climbing wall and athletic development hub). And with 55 per cent of Etonians committed to learning an instrument, the school hall’s upgrade now provides a thoroughly modern music and performance space, with acoustic reflectors to better focus sound. But with all this achievement, what is head Simon Henderson proudest of? ‘In general, I think we’ve got happy kids. They behave really well, they’re nice, they’re kind and... getting kinder.’
