With its weald highlands, chalk downs, long stretches of coast, its cathedral city of Chichester and market towns, West Sussex offers something for all ages. Particularly for pensioners.

The county has supplanted Dorset as the most desirable retirement location in England and Wales.

West Sussex has the second highest net inflow of pensioners and performed strongly across the board on measures including life expectancy, temperature, income levels, low crime rates and quality of healthcare.

The south and east coast of England dominated the top of the rankings, which are compiled annually by Prudential.

After West Sussex and Dorset, which slipped into second place, the most attractive counties for pensioners were East Sussex, Devon and Norfolk.

Surrey, another popular retirement location, had the highest average income
