Conservative leader of Arun District Council, Shaun Gunner, criticised the project with concerns regarding money.
Conservative leader of Arun District Council described the plans to convert the upper floors of Bognor Regis arcade as ‘all the makings of a slow-motion car crash’.
Shaun Gunner spoke out following support for the proposed borrowing of more than £7.3 million to be put towards the conversion.
Support was shown during a meeting with the economy committee, where Mr Gunner called for the decision to be deferred while other options are explored.
His decision was criticised as officers are concerned that a delay would see the council lose out on government funding and put the project back by a year.
However, Mr Gunner feared that the proposed development would leave the council facing a deficit of more than £28,000.
The Conservative councillor said that it was ‘bad enough’ to make a rushed through decision without any scrutiny:
“We’re forecasting to make a loss which apparently we will need to find ‘savings’ to fund, this doesn’t exactly suggest this is in the best interest of the town or a good use of public money.”
