Although his work is little known today, Theodore Wendel belonged to the first wave of American Impressionists. This small band, also including Theodore Robinson, painted in France at Giverny in the 1880s and knew Claude Monet, who converted the Americans to the still-young French movement. This small landscape of an open field populated with haystacks is an early exercise demonstrating Wendel's efforts to assimilate Impressionist practices. A
