On outbreak of war in 1914, he enlisted in 10 Battalion, Canadian Mounted Infantry. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Egypt and France before being discharged for theft on 26 April 1915. He then travelled to Australia where he re-enlisted with 4 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.
