Old leaves bearing the latter fimgus were wintered out-doors in filter paper and in the spring were found with this ascigerous stage. The ascospores were isolated, grown in pure culture and typical conidia were produced. The ascospores also infected the host leaves successfully producing there the typical Gloeosporium. Perithecia of this species were first obtained by Clinton ^^^ who grew them in abundance on artificial media from sowings of coni- diospores taken from ptire cultures. The typical Gloeosporium stage was also grown from ascospores. Perithecia were also found in pure cultures on apple agar by Spaulding and von Schrenk. They appeared in black knotted masses
