In this era, Brittains was a leading British paper manufacturer, with a history dating back to 1854, when they succeeded the Fourdrinier brothers, the inventors of the first papermaking machine, one that could produce a continuous sheet of paper. Thomas Brittain took over the mill of the Fourdrinier Bros in 1854, who had deveoloped the original French design and the Fourdrinier paper machine bullt in 1804 revolutionised the manufacture of paper.
