The box kite was said to have been invented (possibly developed) in 1893 by British born Lawrence Hargrave,who had emigrated to Australia. He was attempting to invent a flying machine and used several kites together (Hargrave cells) to create more lift. He succeeded in flying 16 feet into the air.
